Saint Veronica of Jerusalem

AD First Century

Born: Caesarea, Philippi

Patron saint of photographers, images, laundry workers

Known in tradition, but not within the scriptural text of the Bible, Saint Veronica is known by her compassion. She was known to wipe Jesus’ face as he walked through the streets of Jerusalem while carrying his cross to his own crucifixion. It is said the image of Jesus’ face was than imprinted upon the cloth.

Standing upon a pile of laundry Saint Veronica looks to the heavens as she holds the image of Christ. A nod to photography the etched acrylic lens flairs frame the subject subtly. The direct association of the image of Christ’s face reflecting upon the cloth makes this Saint attractive to the modern photographer.Humorous would be the laundry pile considering that it is said that the image of Christ never faded and could be seen as a relic at Old Saint Peter’s church in Rome until it was said to have been destroyed in the Sack of Rome in 1527.

Although not a martyr or prominent saint. Saint Veronica was an example of having compassion for the persecuted and taking a simple action of service against the mob mentality of a vulgar and violent situation.
