Saint Catherine of Bologna

AD 1413-1463

Born: Bologna, Italy

Survived: decomposition

Died: Bologna, Italy

Patron saint of artists, writers, liberal arts, temptation

A mystic, Saint Catherine was known for her renunciation of her family’s wealth and stature. Because she was raised as a lady-in-waiting she had received an education in music, reading, writing, and had access to the library of the court which contained illuminated manuscripts. A writer and artist, Saint Catherine wrote many sermons, treatises, hymns of praise, poetry, and not only wrote her own breviary (prayer book) but illustrated them as well as copied them. Her most important work was not released until close to her natural death and was a manuscript upon which she describes her visions of God and Satan. This record, Seven Spiritual Weapons Neccessary for Spiritual Warfare became a staple in the Saint Clare nun’s campaign for her canonization.

Known as the ‘Seated Saint” Saint Catherine’s body can still be found incorrupted in her St. Clare habit. Darkened by candle soot she remains clutching a cross and holding a bible seated on a golden throne in the chapel of Chiesa della Santa. She is known to still be pliable. In the painting Saint Catherine holds the tools of her communication of God’s love and gifting through the portrayal of a paintbrush and a quill.

Saint Catherine of Bologna was well respected among the piety and was well known for her daily pattern of prayer, work, and charity.
