Rohingya

Stateless

The Rohingya people trace their origins to the Rakhine State of Myanmar, a land blessed with lush palm trees and glistening waters. Embracing their Indo-Aryan heritage, they form a predominately Muslim community. While radiating a rich cultural tapestry, they still bear the heavy burden of persecution as a marginalized minority. Trapped in the clutches of injustice, the Rohingya people have been denied their rightful citizenship under the 1982 Myanmar nationality law. In a painful twist, their identity is disavowed, with the term “Rohingya” and no longer recognized being replaced by the label “Bengali.” This deliberate act of erasure adds to their plight, amplifying their struggles and challenges.

In 2017, a genocide occurred and propelled a massive exodus of 900,000 refugees seeking solace across the border in neighboring Bangladesh. Many others embarked on treacherous journeys, hoping to find refuge in the welcoming embrace of surrounding countries. The scale of this tragedy has left a mark on humanity and reminds us of the urgent need for compassion and solidarity.

Against the backdrop of the Rakhine State’s vibrant hues- where verdant greens blend seamlessly with golden splendor, which are the colors of the Rohingya flag, we encounter a courageous Rohingya woman. Wrapped in the deep crimson folds of her hijab and adorned with intricate beadwork, she is a symbol of resilience amidst adversity. This painting, born in the heart of New Orleans during the depths of the pandemic, holds a unique distinction. It marks the inception of a groundbreaking series devoted to shedding light on stateless communities. Through the strokes of the artist’s brush, a visual testament to their struggles and triumphs was crafted, bringing forth narratives that demand attention and compassion.
