Karen

Stateless

The Karen people, a stateless community, reside in Northern Thailand along the Myanmar border, originating from the Karen State in Myanmar. Fleeing as refugees due to a civil war within their territory, they are one of the seven ethnic minorities coexisting in Thailand. Comprising diverse Sino- Tibetan language-speaking groups, these Karen communities lack a common language or culture but share the challenges that arise from their statelessness. Like other indigenous populations, the Karen face difficulties securing land rights in their homeland and Thailand, and are often labeled squatters. Notably, the Karen people do not exhibit Chinese influences like other groups in the area, and their language is written in Burmese Script. However, Thailand does not recognize them as refugees but considers them illegal immigrants. Consequently, the Karen are confined to camps, with the presence of Burmese land mines in the Karen State making it unsafe for them to return due to safety concerns.

In this captivating painting, a Karen woman proudly displays her traditional hand-woven garments, showcasing the vibrant colors and intricate embroidery techniques specific to her community. Her hand gently rests on a yellow drum, a prominent symbol depicted on the Karen national flag, representing the unity of the Karen people. The background artfully portrays the Karen State in Myanmar, characterized by lush terrains and enchanting lagoons. The painting meticulously incorporates the colors of the Karen flag- red, blue, and white- with red symbolizing bravery, blue representing honesty, and white embodying purity and sincerity.
